Airwallex is a business account for companies that trade internationally: hold and convert multiple currencies, pay suppliers abroad, issue company cards and accept card payments from customers — in one account. In Europe it is provided by Airwallex (Netherlands) B.V. and AWX Lithuania, UAB, both licensed electronic money institutions.

What you get

  • Global Accounts — open local and foreign-currency accounts so customers and platforms can pay you like a domestic business.
  • FX and transfers — convert at 0.5% above the interbank rate for major currencies and send to more than 120 countries.
  • Company cards — multi-currency cards for employees and the company.
  • Payment acceptance — take card and local payment methods online, with like-for-like settlement in multiple currencies to avoid unnecessary conversions.
  • Bill pay, expense management and integrations with accounting software.
  • Yield — an optional return on EUR, GBP and USD balances through money-market funds (annual fee from 0.24% to 0.63% depending on plan and currency). This is an investment, not a savings account, and it is not covered by the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme.

Who can open an account?

Airwallex is for registered businesses only — it does not offer personal accounts. In Europe, businesses registered in all EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland can apply (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and other central and eastern European countries are served by the Lithuanian entity). Airwallex’s EEA document list includes a section for sole traders, so registered sole traders can apply too; unregistered freelancers should look at a personal multi-currency account instead.

You will typically need your company registration details, proof of business address, information about owners and directors, and photo ID with a liveness check for the people involved.

Airwallex or Wise Business?

Airwallex suits companies that also want to accept card payments, issue many employee cards and hold larger balances. Wise Business has no monthly fee at all and conversion fees that start lower (from 0.2%), but it is not currently accepting new customers for card acceptance.
